So with all the campaign talk about when the United States should leave Iraq, if the US should leave Iraq, under what conditions, et cetera, something very important has been overlooked: it's not up to the US at all.

If troops are to stay in Iraq, it must be by the grace of Prime Minister al-Maliki. At the moment, it looks like talks to extend the stay of US troops is breaking down, and may be required to withdraw by UN law at the end of the year. Will this get any play in the upcoming presidential debates, or more coverage in the mainstream media? Let's hope so...
